A model design is first put into a computer on the basis of which a three-dimensional object is created by adding layer after layer of material(s). This whole process is referred to as 3d Printing, which has been previously used to create Aesthetic (and also sometimes functional) prototypes of products and hence is also commonly known as "Rapid Prototyping".

Extremely intricate and complex geometric designs can be created at the push of a button using 3d Printing but for perfection in the finish specific 3d Printing Materials need to be used for specific finished products. Like ABS Plastic and Nylon are extremely common materials which are used in high temperature builds, as they have a very high melting point.

Materials like PLA, which is a cornstarch derivative and thus in turn is biodegradable is used to make products like beer (six-pack) holders which can later on simply disintegrate into nature. Water Soluble and easily dissolvable Printing materials like PVA and HDPE are used to make such products which have a chance of coming in contact with the marine life.

Printing Materials changing with newer processes

There are several different processes of 3d Printing and they keep changing from time to time. "Fused Filament Fabrication" or “Fused Deposition Modeling" is a process where the object is printed by extruding small beads or streams of the material which harden in an instant to form layers. Wood and Meta Filaments are extremely expensive nowadays, providing an attractive finish.

In the present day this particular process of Printing has undergone paramount change and has started using plastic "pellets" and/or particles in place of filaments and is now known as the "Fused Pellet Deposition". While purchasing 3d Printing materials you have to always be updated with the latest techniques to purchase the right raw materials for the product.
