The lithium ion batteries have shown a new path for technological success as they do provide stationary storage solutions and enable the effective use of energy resources. They are high in demand and are used in gadgets and consumer tools and gadgets. Though the cost of this is very high, it is being used widely and soon will be connected to solar cells and windmills for better technological work.

Cathode materials: the cathode materials include lithium metal oxide (LiCoO2), vanadium oxides, Olivines and rechargeable lithium oxides. The oxides containing cobalt and nickel are very important in these batteries and also show high stability in a range of high voltage. The cobalt, nickel and manganese work together very well.
 

Anode materials: these materials are generally lithium, graphite, lithium-alloying materials, silicon etc. lithium is a very useful material but also results in short circuits as dendritic growth or cyclic behaviour starts taking place. The alloy of the anodes has high capacities but generally show a high volume change which results in a poor cyclic behaviour.
 

Electrolytes: a robust electrolyte is needed for a safe and long lasting battery. By this they can withstand high temperature and great voltage and also offers high mobility of lithium ions. This is one of the most important li ion battery materials.
 

Cost of li ion battery materials

The cost of these ion battery materials is very high and it needs a huge effort to reduce the processing cost, material cost for the producers. The process includes mixing, coating, calendaring, slitting, cutting, winding and inspection followed by testing which results in a huge cost of these li ion battery materials.
